The purpose is not to guarantee insight, but to prepare the pathway for understanding so deliberately that the intended relationship becomes increasingly difficult to miss.

THE DESIGN PROBLEM

Why necessary information isn’t enough

Learners can encounter every fact, step, and explanation they appear to need and still fail to see the relationships that makes those pieces meaningful. The breakdown may not be an information shortage.

Most training assumes that if learners are struggling, the fix is more explanation, more examples, or more repetition of the same content. While these interventions can certainly help, catalytic curriculum design (CCD) starts from a different premise. The gap is often a missing connection, not a missing fact. If so, the central design question becomes what could prevent the learner from seeing the connection that matters, and the pathway should be arranged around that.

The breakdown may not be an information shortage. Instead, a prerequisite idea may be missing. Two relevant concepts may remain disconnected. An existing assumption may cause the learner to misread what is being explained.

The CCD framework begins with the learner’s existing understanding, identifies the barriers preventing a more useful mental model from forming, and arranges the pathway around that specific conceptual change.
